REI receives Tomahawk Bridge Hwy Construction Award 2012

In January REI Engineering Inc. was recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for its project leadership during the reconstruction of Tomahawk's Wisconsin River Bridge with WisDOT's Outstanding Highway Construction Award – Excellence in Large Structures. REI's team members for this project were Pat Bailey – Project Leader, Tom Willmarth and Jeff Strunk – Project Inspectors.

Tomahawk City leaders coined the phrase "Bridging the Gap", as construction to replace the 89-year old steel girder bridge began in early October 2010. Known locally as "Veterans Memorial Bridge", this structure served as the only direct transportation link between the north and south sides of the City of Tomahawk.

The project was completed in June 2011, in a mere 9 months and in time for the tourist season that is critical to the local economy. The new aesthetically pleasing structure contains numerous state of the art features including stamped and stained concrete piers and parapets, pedestrian tunnel, granite rock retaining wall, decorative chip seal and epoxy overlay, bicycle lanes and wireless controlled LED street lighting. Extensive plantings, landscaping and a native river rock median were also added.

The prime contractor for the project, Lunda Construction Company, stated that "through the combined efforts and cooperation of the City of Tomahawk, local businesses, WisDOT, DNR, project inspectors (REI Engineering) and project designers (S.E.H)," they were able to deliver a high-quality project on time and on budget." They also stated that "perhaps the single biggest challenge with this project was the sequencing of work relative to the cold weather and frozen river."

The final result is a structure that connects the two economic regions of the community and, compliments the natural beauty of its surroundings. It is a fitting memorial to all veterans and truly "Bridges the Gap".
